The IFB AdiposityDiseases was established as a joint institution of the Faculty of Medicine at Leipzig University and University of Leipzig Medical Center (coordinator: Prof. Dr. Michael Stumvoll) and funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research with approximately 45 million euros from 2010 to 2020. This funding enabled research and the treatment of morbid overweight (obesity) and its associated diseases in children, adolescents and adults in a broad range that was unique in Germany. The focus was on interdisciplinarity in clinical studies and basic research. Researchers from different disciplines worked together in six research areas, which concentrated on hormones, genetics, childhood obesity, obesity surgery, neuroimaging and psychosocial aspects. In addition to a total of seven junior research groups, there were five professorships, which were continued at the University of Leipzig. Through the IFB, an even closer networking between many different clinics and institutes of the University Medicine Leipzig could be achieved. Many of the scientific activities can be further treated and deepened in the future at the Helmholtz Center for Metabolism, Obesity and Vascular Research (HI-MAG).
