The Department of Ophthalmology is a state-of-the-art health care facility deeply rooted in rich tradition. It is not only the oldest university institution dedicated to ophthalmology in all of Germany, but many ophthalmologists who have made landmark contributions to the advancement of the field in the last 150 years have been members of our faculty. Since 1852, treatment to eye diseases in every branch of ophthalmology has been provided at our Department of Ophthalmology.
Our clinic features an in-patient ward with beds for 29 patients, an out-patient clinic, specific clinics such as children´s ophthalmology and neuroophthalmology which, for example, focus on the treatment of strabism (squint), and an extensive diagnostics department where specific examinations are performed on state-of-the-art equipment. The clinic also features a laser department and is a renowned center for the treatment of eye tumors. The clinic is also home to the Leipzig Corneal Bank which is an active member of the European Eye Bank Association which cooperates with Eurotransplant in Leiden, Holland.
In-patient operations, such as retinal surgery, are performed at the Liebigstraße 12; cataract and eyelid operations are generally performed on an out-patient basis in the neighboring Operation Center at Paul-List Str. 7.
