Since August 2021 I’m a professor of Medical Data Science at the Leipzig University. I'm heading the Dept. Medical Data Science at the Medical Informatics Center at the Leipzig University Medical Center. I'm also affiliated with the Institute for Medical Informatics, Statstics and Epidemiology at the Medical Faculty.
Before, I have been a Full Professor for Databases and Information Systems at the Mittweida University of Applied Sciences, the largest of these Universities in Saxony.
From 2002 to 2017, I’ve been a scientific member of different institutions at the University of Leipzig including the Interdisciplinary Center for Bioinformatics, the LIFE Research Center, and the Database Group (Institute for Computer Sciences).I got a Ph.D in 2007 from the Computer Science Dept. of the Leipzig University with a thesis about data integration approaches in the Life Science domain.
My interests are very broad and ranges from applying machine and deep learning techniques to patient care data to
computer sciences topics, such as infrastructures for distributed computing and clinical decision support systems (CDSS). For latter, we are working on the AMPEL system, a new type of CDSS. We use these infrastructures for executing our analyses over different participating data sites, such as data integration centers, and to include analysis results, such as machine learning models, into the daily clinical routine and, thus, to support physicians in their daily work.
I’m working in several Germany-wide working groups on national level aiming at a) sharing scientific data across different sites and b) analyzing fragemented data in a distributed way.
For latter, I'm involved in the Personal Health Train development (PADME) and the project PrivateAIM project.
