Section 1 is our most ‘colourful’ facility.
In addition to mice, rats, rabbits and pigs are also kept here. The small rodents are kept in cages with open mesh lids, the rabbits in newly created floor housing with bedding made from wood shavings and plenty of hiding places. The pigs are housed in loose pens with places to lie down and various toys keep them occupied.
The facility has "Sepzifiziert Pathogenfrei (SPF)" status ("Specified Pathogen Free", this means that there are no germs in the facility that are harmful to mice), so it is free of germs that are classified as unfavorable for the animal population and is protected by a hygienic barrier. The hygiene status is monitored by regular tests carried out by a specialist laboratory. To enter the facility, all persons must put on hygienic clothing and change their shoes. All material is disinfected before it can be brought into the facility.
The scientists have access to two modern operating rooms with various anesthesia systems, a fluoroscopy system and a fully equipped laboratory. In addition to small rodents, medium-sized laboratory animals, including pigs and sheep, can also be operated on professionally in these rooms.
After appropriate instruction, the scientific staff may enter and use the project and operating rooms independently. Scientific staff are not permitted to enter the breeding rooms.
