The Central Animal Husbandry of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Leipzig is a decentralized service facility divided into four sections, in which small to medium-sized laboratory animals are bred and housed. Our task is to provide laboratory animals, premises and equipment as well as the relevant expertise, advice and support for experimental animal research. Our team of around 30 specialists is made up of animal care technicians, veterinary engineers and specialist animal care staff for research and clinics as well as from several areas of the life sciences, for example biology, veterinary medicine and biochemistry.
In addition to theoretical and practical advice, we also offer assistance with all procedures on animals, for example with regard to stress during surgical interventions, anesthesia and postsurgical care, etc., as well as services such as the cryopreservation of mouse sperm or mouse embryos and the rehabilitation of mice infected with pathogens by embryo transfer.
Another important task is the training and further education of all people working in animal experimentation or animal care within university medicine.
